believe it or not i know your symbian phone from 2008 can't run it so you wouldn't know but snapchat is literally just like texting but with photos, stories (extremely basic social media feature and not even the main element of snapchat) and paranoid security features. unless you want to tell kids not to fancy text each other. and lots of kids are antsy about giving their phone numbers to people i guess because they don't want calls and only communicate through snapchat or similar

look i too have lived in cajun country and been somewhat isolated from "modernity" so i partially get where you're coming from but you have to acknowledge you don't understand the culture most people are growing up in.
