recap: how did OTBH fail?

OTBH failed because you folks weren't willing to actually moderate and prevent the forum from descending into nothing but shitposts like it immediately did

the moment nobody stepped up to do that was the moment OTBH was doomed to fail

it failed because of that lame "everybody has the right to post whatever they want as long as it's in the tos" ideology that ruined every pre-ottd forum
really glad that way of thinking went away

we still have that mentality though we just moderate it instead of letting it fester

well it's more (imo) due to the fact that we have a small dedicated group of users that actually know what is and isn't acceptable(for the most part)
something that bathhouse didn't because it let everybody in to do whatever the hell they wanted

i think its because the lack of any actual discussion caused people to gradually drop off back into rot, where you could essentially get the same level of quality with no wait.

the reasons were largely the same just add

everything OTBH was good at OTTD was better

what i'm going to say is most likely entirely wrong, but heres my theory on why ottd works:

ottd was created through iterations of spinoffs, where the shitposters were combed over time due to just how awful they were and the ones who had potential improved over each iteration

eventually those who improved would get to the point where they could help those who would otherwise be kicked off.

otbh was a hasty collective of rot shitposters, and just wasn't lucky enough to spur a chain of spinoffs like freedomforum

you don't need luck to spur a chain of spinoffs, you need a reason for people to stick around and quality content to do it

OTFF isn't a typical case of how things work out

OTFF died because they deleted me and then a day later the whole forum broke for over a week, not because of a lack of quality content or users. it was literally a complete fluke and if it hadn't been for those two events occurring at the same time the forum would have probably survived and prospered for awhile before dying out

instead, because both of those things did happen, the community split between OTFFV and OTB and eventually OTB was where we all ended up because OTB simply had more people and a stronger content base to work with

i think that otff could've struggled along for awhile had informe not decided to break(also that period was significantly longer than a week)

it wasn't that it could've, it was that it would've

it wasn't for nothing that OTFF was the largest OTx forum in history until OTTD. it had like 25 active users and was showing no signs of dying

P/B was a huge forum on OTFF, the MTV/B migration hadn't happened, and RP4 wasn't a thing yet

which is kinda funny because it initially got advertised as a place where there wouldn't be any bronies

The thing with having a shitty ROBLOX spinoff is that the only incentive for ROBLOX users to go on your spinoff is the lack of a mean word filter and the ability to talk about your favorite sexy Gardevoir titty porn

The other thing about shitty ROBLOX spinoffs is that they only 'survive' because their members just fight over stupid shit and as soon as the fighting stops they just keel over - I saw on OTBH it was literally just amsk8r arguing with FD and Magician over stupid shit like there was a 50 page thread where FD and amtator were just arguing about fucking cell phones

on a more positive note, i think a lot of people like spinoffs because they grow up to the point in which they come to an intermediary between being an roter and an actual decent person on the internet, and become too jaded to shitpost on rot any longer.

so they basically make spinoffs with other jaded users to have conversations without somebody talking about putting peanut butter on their penis or derailing the thread with minecraft.
