Somewhere high above where the trees cease to have their leaves, higher still above where they cease to be at all, sat the quiet, windswept wasteland on which the city of Viweluunde had been placed. The thermometer hovered around negative fifty--Fahrenheit, of course: that was the unit that this forever-frozen city had used for as long as it could care to remember--a wholly normal temperature for a January day like this one.

It was a gloomy Monday morning. A uniform sea of bleak gray clouds painted the skies above this miserable outpost of life, and snow, seemingly ever-present in these parts, fell in great curtains across the wastes, draping what land had not already been claimed by earlier storms in an ocean of white. Outside what few buildings the town had, the winds wailed and howled, lapping against the town not unlike the sea to a wall and kicking snow up as though a blizzard were raging...

did this awhile ago and haven't really worked on it since
Viubladan ul Laven (1838-96)

Very little can be said of Viu ul Laven that has not already been said. Perhaps the most disastrous prince in recent memory, his entire life was spent on the defensive; born to a dysfunctional family, functionally orphaned at a young age, raised into princehood, forced into an abysmal, ultimately catastrophic marriage... The likes of that. He was born in 1838 to the royal couple of Pvints Viubladan ul Minore and the Yangapvintas Maninen Glitera ul Yangnos--aged 27 and 33 at the time, respectively. Neither was properly prepared for a child; little good followed. (The long history of alcoholism that is known to plague the modern Viubladansi probably began with Viu ul Minore, in fact.) Although he was already quite a drinker to begin with, the birth of Viu ul Laven almost certainly exacerbated the tendency.

Nevertheless, not much can be said of the early life of Viu ul Laven. Just as any relatively important Tsavintsian, he attended the best schools possible and lived an almost worry-free childhood; at least, on paper. In reality, virtually his entire childhood was spent bouncing between Maninen and Viu ul Minore, the threat of a royal divorce constantly overhead. At one point, in 1841, when he was four, the papers were half filed, and the only thing standing between filing was the threat of divine intervention. Ultimately, the marriage was never ended--but certainly it must have felt like it most of the time: well into Laven's adulthood, Minore and Maninen refused to live with each other.

started something new

The room was small and barren, aside from two small chairs on which the two figures sat which had been hastily crowded against a small wooden desk. It was almost three in the morning--though this deep in the castle you would have never figured it--and beyond the posting of a single guard outside the wooden door, the two were alone.

"Tevilias," the larger figure spoke without warning. "What's going on?"

"At least we don't betray you!"
the ponies came and cried
but when the dragons looked around
they found the ponies lied.
"At least we don't attack you,
evict you like we should!"
but then the dragons moved around
and found the ponies would.
"At least we won't kill all you,
ignore you like we say!"
but then they came across the hills,
and drove the dragons away.
"At least you have a homeland,
a place where you can be!"
and then it all was annexed,
for the good of the Elųnessi.
"At least you have some money,
a job to pay yourself!"
and then they came and took the jobs,
and with them all the wealth.
"But at least you're independent,
no worries about us now!
For great Elųnessia,
has given you her vow!
We hope to work again with you,
we hope that you will see:
we will not betray you,
for we are Elųsi!"

As the Impurist Movement within Yaraa and the Impurist Movement in general began to wane, there was a sense within Yaraa that a decisive strike against the movement ought to be struck, and nowhere was that sense more prominent than within the Yaraan Kryfon’s Movement. The date was 17 June, 1961—Yaraa at the time was just recovering from a string of Impurist bombings that resulted in the deaths of almost 50 people—and within the hot, cramped Yolrie-based headquarters of the YKM, a debate was raging between the radicals of the Yaraan-left and the comparatively moderate leadership of the YKM. It was a heated debate, for certain. The left-wing faction within Yaraan politics was the dominant force then only in the local levels of politics, whereas the moderates controlled virtually every other facet of political life in Yaraa all the way up into the Kryfonsparliszaiye, in which the YKM then held 12 seats. Yet even so, the ever growing cries of the left-wing could not simply be ignored by the YKM: with every year, the left grew larger and larger, more militant and more pessimistic about the chances of peaceful solutions to a growing number of bombings and attacks by Impurists and ever increasing legislative restrictions on Yaraans by the whims of the Loyalists and Royalists.

fleshed it out a bit more

1 — The “Purge” Plot

Left-wingers, tired of being downtrodden, demanded action against the Impurists immediately. It was imperative, they emphasized, that Yaraans take control of the situation while they could, and the YKM stood firmly in the way of that. The moderates, on the other hand, were weary of taking such actions, and with good reason. Even within Yaraa, support for a campaign against Impurism seemed negligible. Few if any Yaraans felt it necessary to take any action against the Impurist cause, much less offensive action of the sort the left-wingers intended. After all, they had the popular backing of Kryfona throughout the kingdom already. Why rock the boat unnecessarily and risk alienating sympathizers to the cause?

Both sides almost certainly had valid points. It was true that the YKM had stonewalled significantly on the matter of taking the fight to Impurism, unlike their Tuszkean brothers who by 1961 had spent almost thirty years opposing Impurism. Likewise it was true that, in the environment of Yaraa, offensive action like what was then occurring in Tuszke was neither popular nor the prefered means of opposition. On this day, however, neither received significant consideration. The left-wingers refused compromise of any kind, and accusations of complicity with the Impurists were levied against those who saw compromise as the best option. Moderates, for their part were not particularly willing to compromise with the left-wing either. To them, the left-wing plan was paramount to shooting a man first and saving the question asking and problem solving for later. And so, when the debate finally ended after hours of going around in circles of accusations and assertions, neither side left happy, and both resolved that the only true way to deal with the situation was to enact their plan before the other could. It was just one of the many small but important actions that would set the stage for the events leading up to the Yaraan Crisis.

To understand why such a great split existed between the radical, generally low-ranking left-wingers of the YKM and the more moderate upper echelons of the party, it is necessary to understand the history of the YKM and its political positions. Historically, the YKM has been by a wide margin the most moderate of any of the parties in the Kryfona Kingdom, with a consistently centrist base, a few forays into the right-wing during its most turbulent moments, and only a relatively recent leftward movement in terms of policy. Even in its formative years, when it was getting its name out and during its time as a militant group fighting for the monarchy-in-exile in the Kryfona Civil War, the party had virtually no radical policies to its name (beyond perhaps the advocacy of Yaraans as equals, but even that is debatable). Consequently, the party earned a reputation for having a very large, almost tent-like base in which almost every member was a centrist and the ranks of the radical wings were virtually nonexistent, a reputation it maintained well into the 1900s.

Beginning in about 1940, however, the political landscape in Yaraa began to change significantly, and with it, the YKM. Impurism, once figured to be a dead political movement, suddenly exploded in popularity in the 1930s, and a systematic campaign by small sects of Impurists began to impact Yaraa’s largest neighbor, Tuszke. At first, the campaign of firebombings and assassinations and political intimidation by the Impurists—by that point having organized themselves into several still-extant groups including the Impurist Movement—stayed effectively contained to Tuszke, and more broadly the province of Reriskzeiy, in which the Tuszkean heartlands sat. By the turn of 1937, however, the Impurists had begun to broaden their horizons. Where in 1934, irregular assassinations by Impurists had spread into Vyfarla-sa-Eiwen and Yerljasqar (where many Tuszkeans who felt it unsafe to live in Tuszke had fled), in 1937 the Impurist Movement was actively attempting to subvert both provinces. Before the end of the year, a semi-official chapter of the Impurist Movement had been established representing both provinces, and within a month of the beginning of 1938, the Impurist Movement turned its attention to Yaraa.

Yaraans, predictably, were concerned by this development. Even before the establishment of the Impurist chapter that would eventually merge with its Tuszkean counterparts, there was an outburst of anxiety and anger within the Yaraan population, and the YKM—by that point one of the largest voices in the room in Yaraa—found itself in a perilous situation.

By 1987, it was clear that the Equestrian population was tired of war. The Aetali War by that point was entering its sixth year, with no end in sight; Equestrian troops had been forced across the borders almost everywhere, and had long since been fighting a defensive war.
