Can't modders offer their stuff for free like they've always been doing?

Ideally I can imagine the heart of the modding community still offering their stuff for free because they were making their stuff for fun in the first place.
Anyone else will just start getting into it for the money and they probably won't last long.

Or so I hope.

i'm sure there's quite a clique of modders who will stay free as in freedom but there are just as many who will sell out

not only that but now steam won't even ban mods directly copied from free ones as long as its making them money

the issues i see here go beyond the ethical problem since there's the usage issues and the fact that refunds can not be acquired for something that guaranteed to be buggy (especially in skyrim cuz that shit crashed like every 15 minutes when i was using it shared with one mod)

that would imply gmod was ever truly alive in a valve controlled world

Perhaps that little part of Gabe Newell's mind that hasn't completely fallen to the dark side realized this was a huge mistake.

they'll probably re-implement it somewhere else with slight modifications by the end of the year

and valve still makes off with a ton of money just because those refunds are guaranteed purchases (steam wallet moneys)

Honestly, I get Valve's thought process behind this,  to make it easier for any mod that's going to be the next Counter Strike or Killing Floor. Thing is, those mods are very few and far between, and the creators usually just put them on Greenlight if they have enough of a following.  Also, you're really not going to find those kind of mods in friggin' Skyrim.
