What was the real watershed moment when everything went down to the shitter?

When the users began to enforce board culture, and the mods stepped up their game to combat the talichan, and it went downhill from there.

after the dirty bombs incident when the fbi took over 4chan, everything went to shit
then moot tried to sell 4chan several times, each time it got worse than the last.

mod incompetence coupled with nepotism
people stopped caring about small essential things and eventually everything got overwhelmed in a sea of shit,
things that were once taboo were gradually being tolerated and then embraced
people couldn't tell between reality and joles
ect…

The Eternal Summer after chanology went live completely nuked the established culture.
It finally went belly up when using "newfag" started to be met with contempt. That was the point where the shitposting intensified to a point we were not able to contain it.
When community self-moderation doesnt work anymore without mod intervention, the board dies.

2005fag here. I don't know about the rest of the site, but when /b/ became absolute shit that is when the rest of 4chan went along with it.
The closest thing to /b/ from 2005 is [s4s] but it isn't the same because there is no discussion or purpose. Combine the randomness of [s4s] with actual discussion and it becomes old /b/.
/b/ changed when operation chanology happened. The whole original point was an irl raid on scientology churches because of some bullshit they did, one of the reasons being they tried to get YTMND sites shut down. There was no human rights element, it was all for the lulz (yes the lulz, something that was fine to say back then but saying it now will have some faggot calling you out). This was the first time anonymous became a thing other than an inside joke, and it marked the end of a lot of places as we knew it. YTMND, SA, 4chan (especially /b/) became cesspools of people flocking in as they got more popular and shit up the place. YTMND fizzled out as major content makers left, SA was once a bastion of OC and now that's stopped, and /b/ kept going for some time. But, there were too many occurrences and actions we did that made us known. I remember seeing Risk Astley rickrolling the Thanksgiving Day Parade in NY as well as the Cherry Chocolate Rain Dr Pepper commercial and i knew the internet would not be the same. There was once a divide between internet and real life, and that has been shattered.
The final straw that broke /b/ was reddit. People on /b/ created rage comics, and reddit started using them and saying they created them. In response, all OC on /b/ was stopped. We stopped using the lingo like lulz and epic. We stopped making funny shit. There were no more epic wins. We basically tried to do what SA did and seal themselves off from greater society, but there is no paywall. To fill the void of no content, normalfags came in. And now we have what we see today. Bunch of edgy retards trying to fit in in a place where once no one wanted to fit in.
And that is my history of how and why /b/ went to shit, and with that the rest of 4chan.
