i think the idea that puerto rico should be must be or wants to be part of america rests on a lack of information on the situation

if you go to puerto rico and talk to puerto ricans you'll quickly find puerto ricans see puerto rico and the us as close together but separate

If the puerto rican people do not want to be a state and puerto rico is getting all the benefits of the state and a straw's length from becoming one, then it's a clear sign the puerto rican government is composed of incompetent baffoons

try reading the article if you include votes made in protest against the way the poll was designed to favor statehood it's more like 45% statehood also statehood is the conservative opinion

like i said it was mostly a strategic vote, given the way the political arena has shifted in the past 4 years there would be no first question and the second question would either stay the same or not have independence on it. also free association is essentially independence, it's sovereignty which is independence in all aspects except military and funding grants 1/3 the size of what america pays now, (the yousgub gives us less money per person than states like new mexico and mississippi that also have a deficit and the main reason we have a deficit is because we're mostly untaxed, in fact if we were taxed like states by my estimates we'd have a surplus) and it's what i advocate for and most independentists are chill with it too and even without adding them in i'm pretty sure the share of the vote would be 50%+ or close

i could dig it up if you want i think my dad has a copy (but lol fuck that) but here's some details. i was born march 21, 2000 in hospital español auxilio mutuo, san juan, i moved to the united states late september of 2002, and went to puerto rico every summer following that for 2-6 weeks, lived there for about two months at one point while we were moving houses and another year while my parents' relationship was deteriorating. i think that's about 30% of my life spent in puerto rico. it's worth noting my mom agreed to move to texas on the condition that if/when he lost his job there we'd move back to puerto rico which didn't happen so we've really been here against our will for like 8 years. i'll just blur it if i do ever get it
