the 2016 OTTHUNDERDOME presidential election
THE PRESIDENCY
this year's presidential elections saw the rise of three great thunderdumbee parties:
- OAKY MCSD, who wants to make America greater than even the Roman Empire and return Constantinople to its rightful owners, running on the self-titled "OAKY Party" ticket
- Spiny T. Things, the former editor at right-wing media sight Burnbart, representing the WHUUUUT Party (officially just the WHUT Party)
- ...and a perpetually ski-masked man only identified as "STALIN" running the Aleppo Party
needless to say, the campaign trail was vitriolic. oaky's plans to return constantinople to europeans was attacked heavily by WHUT Party bloggers and Burnbart in particular, who repeatedly lambasted it as un-American.
oaky for his part fired several volleys back, calling Spiny's goals "misguided, impossible, and not in the best interests of America" on the campaign trail, and stating that Spiny in particular was anti-Roman.
STALIN's run on the other hand was very quiet. Burnbart, considering him and the Aleppo Party as outsiders in terms of victory, focused much more on Oaky. the only major headline against STALIN came from Oaky, who accused him of being unable to connect with the typical American for having not eaten a burger in his life.
ELECTION NIGHT
OAKY - 240
WHUT - 189
ALEPPO - 109
election night came as a sudden shock to all parties involved: nobody reached the magical 270 votes to become president. a strong performance from Oaky in the upper north and down south led him to an impressive 240--nonetheless 30 short of the majority needed. the WHUT party was carried on the crest of winning California and Texas--a combined 93 electoral votes which could have easily carried Oaky to a majority--but fell well short of oaky with 189 votes. the Aleppo Party, unsurprisingly, fell dead last with just 109, having won a motley crew of leftover states such as Alaska and South Carolina.
the lack of a majority triggered an immediate vote in the House of Representatives--also up for election, as detailed later--which previously had only happened two times in the history of america.
THE HOR VOTE
the HoR vote was equally dramatic: STALIN immediately resolved that the states which he had won ought to go to other candidates--to which, he did not specify. there immediately was a split in the ranks of the aleppo party, which would come to define the night.
California was the first to vote (in the OTTD HoR, the vote goes from largest state electorally to smallest), casting its vote for Spiny, with Texas and Illinois following. Oaky, however, pulled ahead quickly: North Carolina, the tenth state in line, made the early HoR vote 7 - 3 in favor of Oaky.
the first Aleppo state up for vote, New Jersey, cast its lot with Spiny. why this was so is unclear, but it set the stage for future Aleppo votes. 14 states in, Massachusetts voted Spiny--the winner of the state--and tied the vote at 7. the next twelve states however were an unmitigated disaster for Spiny: just two states (Maryland, which he had won, and South Carolina, an Aleppo state) fell for him, and with Louisiana's vote the tally stood at 17 - 9 in favor of OAKY MCSD.
the influence of the Aleppo states greatly increased here. despite the catastrophic string of votes, Spiny won six of the next seven states, four of which had been won by the Aleppo Party. With Kansas' vote, the tally stood at 19 - 16.
suddenly, however, the Oaky Party raised a complaint: the votes had been improperly tallied and it was really 19 - 15. chaos ensued, with WHUT supporters arguing that there was no tallying error and that Oaky Party members were simply trying to wait out the vote so that they could cruise to a majority. a near fist-fight broke out between several delegates, and they had to be separated. when the dust settled, it became clear that in fact the votes had been tallied improperly: a phantom vote had gone to Spiny. the tally became 19 - 15.
something of a back-and-forth occurred in the next states to vote: with New Hampshire's vote the tally sat at 21 - 17. Rhode Island, an Aleppo state, then casted a vote for OAKY--the first Aleppo state to do in the last eight. Maine, also an ALEPPO state, balanced it out by voting Spiny.
with just South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska to go, all of the states which voted for Oaky had cast their ballots. spinny had one outstanding vote, that of Wyoming, but otherwise was now reliant on the goodwill of the Aleppo states. when South Dakota voted, however, it was clear that the party was over: they voted Oaky. Montana and Alaska followed, and Oaky won a 27 - 23 majority, becoming President
THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
154 seats WHUT
148 seats OAKY
133 seats ALEPPO
the house of representatives, however, was another story. despite the domination of the Oaky Party in the electoral college, voters split their tickets heavily, and Spiny's WHUT Party came out with a 6 seat advantage in the HoR, garnering 154 seats to Oaky's 148. and, just like in the electoral college, the Aleppo Party lagged behind the other two significantly: with just 133 seats and a fragmented ideology, the party was effectively shut out of influence in the HoR.
THE SENATE
WHUT - 39
OAKY - 34
ALEPPO - 27
capping off the elections, the entire senate was up for election this year. Spiny's WHUT Party again came out on top with 39 seats, and again the OAKY Party closely trailed behind, leaving the Aleppo Party in the dust.
