1911- Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition made landfall on Antarctica in their Viking longboats, the Norwegians found themselves disappointed to find nothing but penguins and ice
1943- Japan launches Operation Ke, a giant "nope the fuck out" evacuation from Guadalcanal after General Douglas MacArthur turned loose Colonel Chesty Puller into hordes of Imperial Japanese Marines to rip them apart personally.
1950- The first prototype of North Korea's currently most advanced warplane the Mig-17 is successfully tested by the Reds.
1973- Elvis Presley's "Aloha from Hawaii" concert is broadcast live via satellite
2010- Yemen declares war on Al-Qaeda despite being nearly 10 years late to the party.
