they have actively been doing this and so far what has actually happened is republicans have gotten:
a) dumber, to the point of now believing things such as obama being a muslim and thinking trump won the popular vote in numbers that come close to a majority
b) more extreme, to the point where all of the major and viable republicans this year were so far right they made romney look like a democrat
c) less american, to the point where almost 50 percent of them report now supporting or liking vladimir putin when previously the republican percentages were lower than those of democrats
d) higher white and minority turnout than they had previously

they already do this and normally they win independents or at least make it competitive

the only reason it didn't happen was because of james comey deciding for some reason that it was necessary to get political at the last possible moment, which dropped hillary's numbers by about 4 points across the board and probably pushed independents out of the competitive range for dems
