well i think it's a couple things that made people love the game
1.soundtrack is golden, you can't argue that
2.the creator was already great at game design(see his halloween hack) so it's not like it was something crapped out by a newbie like so many other indie games these days(meaning that mechanically, story, dialogue, etc wasn't trash)
3.the whole "lol kill them or spare them YOUR CHOICE" thing always makes people like games(see spec ops the line)
