civ battle royale mark 3 gets delayed repeatedly; now on hiatus until february
so it was recently announced that the world famous civilization v battle royale would have a 3rd iteration concurrent with the 2nd one which is still ongoing, to the glorious cheers of hundreds of redditors around the world, and not for nothing: not only would this be the biggest and baddest battle royale to date, but it would also push the limits of technological innovation! to quote their cover page:
now, this was all announced on december 14th, with an expected release date of december 26th, 2016. not a particularly big deal, right? well this didn't pan out quite as expected. to quote the announcement:
still fine, right? well the launch date came yesterday, and that was fine. the twitch stream started up, announcements were made, everybody was hype as fuck, and then out of nowhere it's delayed for another day:
the stream keeps going though, with a 24 hour count down. things still hype, everything's going great, and then we get to today
so there's about seven minutes left on the timer, and suddenly it gets delayed for another hour citing technical issues. by this point people are wondering what the fuck is going on, the subreddit for CBR is going wild with weird corruption shit and strange happenings, and all the while the timer is still counting down
timer ticks down to 0, and all of a sudden, SHIT IS HAPPENING OH MY GOD MIGHT IT HAPPEN FINALLY FOR REAL THIS TIME, but then suddenly the OC that was on the stream stops, the stream cuts to a repeating message and a screen like one of the ones you get when you don't have a TV signal, and an announcement is suddenly made by the big man himself running it all:
to make a long story short: MK3 is not go, shit happened, the whole stream was a big waste of time, but hey guys here's an ARG to compensate!
needless to say this was not very well received, with many people asking why exactly the CBR team didn't just come forward with what was going on. some dudes in the mean time worked on completing the ARG, and somewhere in the madness it was announced that MK3 would be on hiatus until february at least:
as of now, we're somewhere near the tail end of this clusterfuck. ARG still going on, MK3 is out of the question for the time being, and who the fuck knows what will happen next.
oh also the dude who came up with the ARG is unhappy with himself to say the least:
First off, we're going live, as in we're-streaming-on-Twitch-live, with the entire thing being rewatchable on Twitch and YouTube. Since we're going live, we'll be introducing Live Data Visualisation on demand, and the ability for Twitch Users to Control the In-Game Camera. There are over three hundred civs on offer, some of which will have their world premieres, and you get to pick who enters the battlefield. When it comes to mods, old friends like Future Worlds will be joining us among newcomers like Ethnic Diversity, Sea Bridges, and Canals - alongside massive improvements to A.I perfomance thanks to the Community Patch.
There's even going to be unique, custom-built city states (Nation-States) and the return of Charitable Donations whenever a Civilization is knocked out of the game. Also did we mention that we have a pre-recorded custom dynamic Narrator that comments on in-game events? Well, we have that too. And much, much more.

Due to unforeseen medical issues with a member of the CBR team, we will not be able to launch the game on December 26th. This was the same member of the team that was getting ready to mobilise for a 26th of December release.
...
Our new launch date is January 7th - 12PM PST, and we're very confident we'll be able to deliver.

Dear community, friends, family and everyone else,
I'll be honest and curt with everyone, it's been a tough time working out this Battle Royale. We've been dealt a bad hand and had the carpet thrown up over our head by the time we try to recover. It's been stressful and hard to manage. We've never had the experience of managing streams or preparing any type of content that's on demand, and as such roadblocks stood in our directions and some misdirection was taken.
Around 6-7 months ago I was approached by an individual who seemed to really understand the potential of a livestreamed Battle Royale. I had thought about this since Mk. I - an interactive stream of Civilization Battle Royale with every single moment showcased to the community.
...It was an amazing idea, and with the server provided to us we thought it was going along swimmingly.
Needless to say, it didn't. Deadlines were pressured by this person who was offering incredibly cheap servers from LiquidSky that offered us anything we needed from native Twitch intergration to incredibly high bandwidth that many people would salivate over. However this individual would remain absent as we worked extremely hard on this project. He'd provide an excuse for his absence, and it seemed like he was going through a tough time - so I worked me and my team overtime to meet a date that he'd push for, but then he'd remain absent and move the date. Rinse and repeat.
We understood that we needed at least 3 weeks of community engagement, and to get everyone on board with this project.
Look... I knew I was being used, but honestly I didn't mind. He wanted to make it the next Twitch Plays Pokemon. Perhaps not in terms of numbers and constant viewership - but something that could stand the test of time. His credentials looked as he could make this happen. He wanted to take an even split. I knew that with my half of the share, I'd redistribute it to the people on my team.
Under his pressure, he pushed for a date much earlier than we desired. We worked out hardest, some people losing sleep as they worked on each and every component from the new AI, new Twitch integration and much more. However, complications came up with his physical health and it was delayed. It gave us more time to customize some elements, work on integrating custom versions of some popular mods, and improve stability all the way around. However, like last time, complications...
We asked for better working conditions. We asked him to be accountable for his actions. We said that we'd consider severing ties. He threatened legal action if we did so. We severed ties.
What is about to happen is the Civilization Series first in-depth ARG (Alternate Reality Game), designed entirely in 72 hours as a response to the rug being pulled out from underneath us. The entire lore around this ARG is designed around the story about how the CBR Mk.3 was produced under:
Extremely rushed, nearly ending with a hostile takeover.
This is our story. One day we will establish a grand empire. But not yet. First -
You need to save Nebuchadnezzar. You need to save the Battle Royale.
You guys have changed my life. And I will continue to work hard for you.
Any help that anyone could provide us with regarding well... anything would be greatly appreciated.

However we don't see it that it's unreasonable to look at a launch date of mid-late February with time heavily subject to change (depending on if we find the resources and team members to help us out along the way).
as of now, we're somewhere near the tail end of this clusterfuck. ARG still going on, MK3 is out of the question for the time being, and who the fuck knows what will happen next.

TL;DR: Civ Battle Royal MK3 goes horribly wrong, gets delayed multiple times, now out of the question until February because of legal/server issues and stream was basically a waste of time. ARG has been done to compensate, but the damage has been done.
Re: civ battle royale mark 3 gets delayed repeatedly; now on hiatus until february
the drama is getting jucier by the minute: additional writeup will be coming to supplement OP
