Equestrians have never been known for their timekeeping, but in spite of that Canterlot is the basis for all timezones and in part because of this Equestrian timezones are all sorts of lopsided

you see, when a universal timezone system was established (1907), it began in Equestria and was centered in Canterlot. predictably, this meant that Canterlot sat at exactly 0, and CLST became the basis for all other timezones

at first, the timezones established were pretty linear and more or less straight down the middle, or failing that, followed the borders of things such as provinces


but, in the year 1932, a very strange thing happened, which kicked off the great fuckery that turned the Equestrian timezone system into a catastrophe

ACT I: TROTTINGHAM AND THE ESTABLISHING OF A PRECEDENT

basically speaking, the first thing which shifted the timezones was something a little frivolous. in 1932, the city of Trottingham sued the government over their placement of the timezones, saying that in essence the city had been completely screwed by its placement in the CLST timezone instead of what was then just the FST timezone. because of this, it was claimed, trottingham had no "connection" to its western neighbor cities in the Mazheien, which at the time were "more important" than other Tratenem-based cities like Suyet. the government, not wanting to deal with anything over fucking timezones of all things quickly adjusted the border, putting Trottingham into what then became TFST -- Trottingham-Firososian Standard Time -- but in the process set up a precedent under law and in practice which would come to be abused.

ACT II: THE BALTIMARE READJUSTMENT AND THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN MHST (+1) TIMEZONE

it was hardly three years later that precedent began to actually fuck things up. in early 1935, the city of Baltimare also sued the government for basically the same reasons as Trottingham did three years earlier in an attempt to force itself into what was then the far eastern timezone. although the case was officially thrown out, the government, anticipating further action, gave into their demands as well. the timezone line was then adjusted to meet the three-corner border of Tratenem-Baltimara-East Mazheien, but when Desiyelia, which would have been tossed into the timezone as well, opted out in favor of CLST, the government had to move the timezone around the city (and thus through Baltimara, not around it as had been anticipated). the new line of the timezone was then to follow the borders of Baltimara up to where it met Istaan, and then it was to follow that line until it hit Manihettenia, at which point it would be straight into the ocean. this also did not pan out as expected though, because the cities of Fillydelphia and Raska, which would have been drawn into the timezone, opted out in favor of CLST too. further complicating things, Red Falls, in the Unincorporated Region, saw the opportunity and ran with it, and opted in to the timezone. suddenly, the modern MHST timezone had been born, and it was just the beginning.

ACT III: THE KRYFONA DEAL AND THE FATE OF THE FAR, FAR EAST

now, with the far eastern timezone extending all the way to the northernmost point in all of Equestria (which was farther west than Canterlot), parts of the Extreme East of Equestria became uppity, and began demanding to be incorporated into the then-Kryfona-based West Kryfona timezone, which sat at +2 and was based in Nylzsryf. the government, now realizing the errors it had made in the expansion of the MHST timezone, reluctantly agreed and began to make a deal with the Kryfona, since the timezone was in their jurisdiction, not Equestria's. the deal was finalized in the later months of 1935, and officially speaking on 1 January, 1936, the border town of Lasika and the Lyoonos cities of Dashevodnaiye and Kojesihipos were realigned into what became Far East Standard Time (+2). to this day, the deal has left the timezone completely lopsided, leaving it to extend as far west as Manehattan, and as far east as the tips of the Arieles Kingdom.

ACT IV: THE RE-REALIGNMENT OF TFST (-1)

in 1942, the government decided to align the rest of the TFST timezone with Trottingham to best effect. the end result was most of the shape of today's strange, slightly lopsided timezone. the timezone was shifted slightly eastward into Elulusia, while in Apilusia, Kayyulyy was shifted out of it, along with the area that shortly after became Appleloosa.

ACT V: THE MOVEMENT OF THE EAST CENTRAL TIMEZONE (-2)

in 1956, a three city coalition of Firososia's Orula, Tirawa'ia's Zecorzani, and Mazheien's Peak Ekkada requested a shift in timezones from TFST (-1) to East Central Standard Time at (-2). since all three cities more or less aligned, the government attempted simply to shift the entire border eastward. however, this backfired when Wozikim and Medehe, cities which would have been impacted by the shift as well, opted out of the move and stayed in -1. TFST as a result gained a wide, but small bulge which has remained since.

ACT VI: THE WEST CENTRAL (-3) SHIFT

two years later in 1958, the four east central cities of Treeless Town, Niyu Elusia (New Poniesland), Hokot, and Teuwa all decided and agreed to shift to the much closer west central time. (it should be noted that this was basically the only time the government came to a mutual agreement with cities that wanted to shift, with the rest of the times being at best begrudgingly allowing cities to jump borders). later that year, the shift took place and all four cities became a part of their timezone of choice.

ACT VII: THE READJUSTMENT OF WESTERN STANDARD TIME (-4)

sensing change was in the cards in WST as well, the government came to a quick agreement when Mazhilasi, Krystalaluunde, and the part of the Krystala'ia that remained in WCST (-3) on new years eve, 1958 and, within a few weeks, adjusted the WST timezone. subsequently, Viuluunde, Krystalaluunde, Mazhilasi and most of what was between them became a part of the timezone.

ACT VIII: THE FINAL TIMEZONE SHIFT; (+0:30)

for many years, there was a silence over Equestria's now extremely jagged and strange timezones, and the belief that finally it was over. not so! with the establishment of Svenia in 1993, and the independence of the Drakonsiluundes and their reformation into the DSR in 1996, the timezone shenanigans reached their curtain call. it was decided after almost five months of debate in Drakonsiluundes that they would "shift" to +0:30, which in essence marked the establishment of a new timezone. seven months later in 1997, the Svenia decided to join them in the timezone. this has resulted in a curious state of affairs in the DSR, because of Drakonsila'ia remaining at +0.

EPILOGUE: THE END RESULTS

today, the side effects of the shifts are somewhat apparent. Raska, Fillydelphia, Desiyelia and Olozi, all of which are farther east than Manehattan, sit one hour behind them. Despite being much farther east than them, they also sit thirty minutes behind places such as Kayyulyy, Konon, Taganosthos and Hegediyosthos-Sehare. Trottingham, which is farther east than Hegediyosthos-Sehare, and around two hundred miles away, is one hour and thirty minutes behind them. Orula, farther east than nearby Medehe, is an hour behind them.

things that from our perspective would not make them conservatives or liberal populists

in the grand scheme of things equestrian politics are so left-leaning in our terms that even conservatives would fall somewhere around center-leftist. this means that, to them, "conservatism" is the sort of shit you'd see out of, say, a democratic socialist.

the particular "conservative" sect of equestrian politics that dominates everything and for a long time was the policy of the land is quoism, which basically sought to keep things as they were in the "Golden Era" of equestria -- the late 1800s and early to mid 1900s, wherein the federation was just forming, gay marriage was not legal in an attempt to revive the male population, and generally things were just "better." as you might anticipate, the conservatives tend to be made up of a bloc of the rural eastern and urban eastern population, which by and large still subscribes to the tenants of quoism.

the populists of equestria also don't really stand for what we know them to stand for; the primary reason why a populist ideology even exists is a combination of the ridiculously low population density of the western regions of equestria and the populations of the region believing that policy should not be determined by a few, especially if it is from a place as far away as canterlot. beyond that, there's generally no consensus in the liberal populist population about what they should stand for, which is why there's a "liberal populist" section and a "conservative populist" section (kansovativa paperej partej). the liberals tend to be far-left leaning in our terms and stand for things we'd never even consider (incest for example), the conservatives tend to be just plain old left-leaning

well yeah unlike america equestrian political beliefs are generally divided along cultural or social lines and most people of the same culture or social status live in the same places

how long would it take to replace their land with prosperous factories and schools

several generations for factories of any meaningful variety in the urban regions and several more in the rural regions

most of the things we take for granted either have not been discovered or cannot be tapped because they'd require extraction which is not something that exists beyond the tried-and-true method of "dig shit up and hope you find something"

i mean these fuckers still use coal(?)-powered trains and carriages and the concept of 'petroleum' is nonexistent, much less 'gasoline'

schools you might be able to get shit done by boosting federal funding since all education is free in equestria (mostly since they lack the concept of "college" thanks to the whole 'cutie mark' shit and because of the extremely young age of adulthood) and the government runs something to the effect of 5 or 6 billion USD in the green each year, but it'd probably only apply to things east of the tsavintsias since only about half a million people live west of them

you'd essentially be trying to build a second-world country into a first-world country, except most of what you would be starting with would be based on technology we grew out of centuries ago
