quality can wait. either way, stuff is worth putting the dough towards. If you get real into it, most cheapass midi controllers come with the shit, and you can get lile a basic keys+pitch wheel and mod for $50 and it includes the cables and what have you

when I made chiptune i used lsdj, which is supposed to the internal synth for the gameboy, but it's been a while since i fucked with trackers.
i know a couple plugins that are dope af for chiptune if you use them right.
